In February 2024, the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics voted to recommend Divisions I, II, and III to sponsor legislation for adding the championship
The projected timeline includes each division reviewing the recommendation and sponsoring a proposal by its respective 2024-25 legislative cycle deadline.
Additionally, the recommendation includes establishing a Women’s Wrestling Committee, beginning work in January 2025 to prepare for the 2026 winter championship.
In order for an NCAA Emerging Sport to become a Championship sport, the following criteria was met:
At least 40 NCAA member institutions with a women’s wrestling varsity program across Divisions I,II, and III need to meet the minimum contest and roster sizes:
Division I
13 Competitions with 7 Participants
Division II
9 Competitions with 6 Participants
Division III
7 Competitions with 6 Participants
